The Submarine Optical Fiber Cable
Chennai - Andaman and Nicobar submarine optical fiber cable has been inaugurated. The Prime Minister of our country has recently inaugurated it through a virtual meeting. It has an undersea cable laid that will travel from Chennai to Andaman and Nicobar. The distance that it has traveled is about 2300 km.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a Union Territory of India Comprising 572 islands of which 37 are inhabited. The territory,s capital is the city of Port Blair. It is located at a much higher distance than the mainland of India.
It was a big Project and BSNL has completed this project in 24 months. Now high-speed internet has reached Andaman and Nicobar, with the help of which we can boost tourism, boost the economy.

From Chennai to Port Blair, Port Blair to Little Andaman and Port Blair to Swaraj Dweep, this service has started in large parts of Andaman Nicobar from today,” Modi said after inaugurating the project through video conferencing.
On December 30, 2018, the Prime Minister had laid the foundation for the 2,312 km long submarine optical fiber cable project connecting Chennai and Port Blair, capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The project has been implemented at a cost of Rs 1,224 crore.
Funds come from the Universal Service Levy (USL) of 5% Charged from all the telecom operators on their Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) which are then deposited into the Consolidated funds of India and require prior parliamentary approval to be dispatched.
According to official figures, 200 GB per second in Port Blair and other islands will provide 400 GB per second internet speed. The project will promote 4G mobile services and digital services such as Tele-education, Telehealth, e-governance services, and tourism. The optical fiber facility will help thousands of families in the union area access education and banking services and can shop and consult with doctors online. It will also facilitate Andaman and Nicobar Command.
The 2300 km undersea high-speed broadband cable will :
Enable faster telecom, boost 4G mobile services, and broadband services.
Boost e-governance, tourism and employment generation
Strengthen India's strategic maritime security.
Facilitate digital education and digital health.
